AV Discussion

  • For the first message, I'll start comparing Nod32 and Dr Web.

Which one has a better heuristic scanning?
Which is supposed to detect more viruses (zoo and ITW)?
Which is better at detecting trojans?
Which is better at detecting script viruses?
Which less slow down the system?
    Which is more frequently updated?

I'll welcome all opinions, regardless it's 100% true or not (in fact, I believe there's no 100% accurate answers on this) ;)
    Thank you.

  • when i had Windows Graphics enabled it took almost
40% more resources!! when i and everyone else with windows
98se/ce set it with out it the resources went back to almost normal....
the attachment shows you how to accomplish it;)

The first one is listed as FREE (but unfortunately I completely don't understand Russian on their webpage).
    The second one is trial.

Are those 2 websites actually the same???
Is CNET giving a wrong description as "FREE" (or maybe Dr Web used to be Free?)??

It's a free trial -- NOT free forever.

If you decide to buy this excellent AV then do it from HERE (http://drweb.imshop.de/index_e.htm) -- it's in English & has the best prices I know of. Namely, the *Home* license is only 25 EURO, or ~$22 American.

Another thing I like about Dr.Web is that it works hand in glove with what IMHO is THE best integrity checker now available. Namely, AdInf (http://www.adinf.com/) -- by the same outfit that does DrWeb.

  • Hello root.

Does Dr Web use a "common" virus names? "Common" here means like the one used by Symantec, Network Associates or TrendMicro. I once tried KAV 4.x and found that it's using an "unfamiliar" (at least if we compare to those 3 companies) virus-naming.

Does Dr Web provide complete virus information like the one provided by those 3 companies (actually, plus Kaspersky as well)? If it is using an "unfamiliar" virus-naming, it must provide *complete* virus descriptions, or at least provide the "equivalent" names so I can search in those 3 companies' websites.
Or, maybe Russian (which examples are Dr Web and KAV) is using a different virus-naming style? Even if Dr Web doesn't provide virus descriptions, it may be okay if it's using the same virus naming as KAV, so that I can refer to Kaspersky when needed instead.

    >> It is very difficult for free AVs to keep up with the paid versions because staying on the top in the AV field requires a lot of resources. Resources that you don't get for free. I commend their efforts though. <<
Remember that Grisoft has a paid AV, too.
And I *guess* (yes, only my guessing at this point of time until you tell me something opposites) companies producing non-popular paid AVs like Dr Web also earn few money so the "resources" are still a problem for them.

  • hello, and i have used Nod32 for three years now and i am using the new beta version. i am quite happy with it and all the new features(except the resource thing for my win98se, and if you turn off the windows graphics, problem solved).
i have never tried Dr.Web but have heard good things about it!!
Nod stopped the Klez virus dead in its tracks... so i will stay with it.
    :D

  • Yes. The file is !drw32e.exe.
You can do the custom install and select all the options including spiderml or if you just do the typical install and if you don't get a second tray icon for spiderml, run the install again and when you get to the option to update, select that, and that will give you spiderml.
I told them they have a problem with their install file, since it is an afterthought type thing. They may have it fixed by now.

  • I hope root checks in here -- he is a user of DrWeb, as I recall.

Myself I have not used either of them, but I follow reviews very carefully & extensively all over the internet.

From what I have read over the past few months...

Which one has a better heuristic scanning? Dr. Web by a nose

Which is supposed to detect more viruses (zoo and ITW)? Nod by a whisker

Which is better at detecting trojans? Dr. Web by half a length

Which is better at detecting script viruses? No info

Which less slow down the system? Nod by half a length

Which is more frequently updated? Dr Web is updated daily. As to Nod, I don't know.

Myself I would lean toward Nod for the simple reason that they are highly-rated PLUS there is a lively, responsive, friendly forum. [All else being equal, a good forum is a BIG plus, in my estimation.]

    shaloha......bellgamin

  • Hi. Bellgamin nailed it pretty close. Following is my opinion, for what its worth.
NOD32 if you want a pure AV, weak on trojan detection. Updates are sporadic. They seem to have it covered though.

DrWeb Great AV and AT both. Frequent updates. Spiderml is now a part of the install and no longer beta. Solid for me.

AVP 3.5 Swiss version is the best AV/AT combo. Best unpacker there is. In spite of its record at Virus Bulletin, it is probably the best protection you can get.
I don't know how long the Swiss will keep 3.5 and going to KAV 4.X is still a problem with bogging systems down. Kaspersky should make a KAV 4.x for XP, and another version for the rest of the Windows OSs.

As far as I'm concerned, these are the top three, and all should do a great job. I would not use NOD32 without TDS3, or maybe Trojan Hunters new version, but I haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

I use DrWeb resident with TDS and use AVP 3.5 scanner only as backup.

It is very difficult for free AVs to keep up with the paid versions because staying on the top in the AV field requires a lot of resources. Resources that you don't get for free. I commend their efforts though.

All other AVs fall somewhere after the three I have mentioned. Some will do an adequate job, and some will not. I've been hearing good things about RAV lately.

There is no replacement for a backup image in the event ones best efforts fail. There are some sharp individuals making malware today and new technologies are evolving all the time. Remember, anti virus vendors are reacting and it is near impossible for them to be proactive. The reason I use DrWeb is because of its very aggressive heuristic scanning. It is as close as you can come to being proactive.

Now you have my opinion. That is not meant to take the place of your own efforts at informing yourself of whats what in protection.

  • Hi,

I currently use NOD32 and am very satisfied with it.

I also ran DrWeb for a while and it performed as well as Nod. Maybe a few more false positives.

I had a problem with SpiderMail so I went to NOD.

You wont go wrong with either, they are both highly rated.

My secondary is Kav4 pro. I have been running Kav for a year and think it is still in the top 3.

    Regards

  • Root,
Does downloading from that link include the email scanner?
I couldn't figure out what to download from their site after you mentioned the mail part.
    thanks,

  • >> when i had Windows Graphics enabled it took almost
    40% more resources!! <<

40% from the overall resources (so if when it's disabled the free resorces is 75%, then it drops to 35%), OR:
40% from the resources comsumed by the program "normally" (so if when it's disabled the free resources is 75%, then it drops to 75%-0.4*(100%-75%)=65%)??
How many % of resources consumed when window graphic is disabled??

    >> i and everyone else with windows
    98se/ce <<

    Is there Win98ce???

What is actually Windows Graphic? (I'm not asking how to disable it but what it is)

  • How often does NOD32 update its database??

BTW, what do you think of Grisoft AVG?? Is it a good antivirus in your perspective, comparable to NOD32 or Dr Web??

How much resources approximately is used by NOD32 with the windows graphic?
By deactivating windows graphic, do you mean you're running in a command-line mode??

  • Here is a list of one of the definition updates.

When DrWeb updates, it adds a new definition file and a text file with the contents. There is no central list.
There is no standard way of naming viruses. Many of the AV vendors use different names. Who's to say which naming convention is the right one?

Here is the English page. http://www.dials.ru/english/
Here is the trial download http://www.dials.ru/english/download/
I think if you use the trial, you can just add the key later, if you buy it.

Also, DrWeb has been a big seller in Europe for a while and they have plenty of $$ to afford a good staff.
